Astron: Kreative Gedanken bereichern immer auch unsere eigene Vorstellungswelt. Kulturgüter leben durch das Weitererzählen von Mythen und Legenden. 'Astron'
is an astro-archaeology project by the German multimedia artist Manfred
Seifert, based in Michelstadt. The project concerns questions about the
foundation of the city of Phalasarna on the island of Crete, at 35°30'44.31
N / 23°34'6.51 E. In
the minds of people throughout time there have been myths and religions
that transcend the ordinary, and it is the relationship of their
settlements to the layout of the heavens they observed (their ‘starscape’)
that forms the main focus for this artistic project. For
a computer artist there is a strong parallel between the starry sky and
the luminous pixel chaos in the darkness of the screen. Cultural
assets live on by the passing down of myths and legends and the star
pictures of our forefathers, the first visualisations of humanity, are
part of this.
In this respect the universe became a sort of global canvas and a
museum, and their cultural assets live on through the centuries -
as imperishable as the stars in the firmament. The
romanticism of the stars and the sky offers each of us a peaceful place
in the hectic rush of the 21st century. Hence I envy our forefathers and
their universe: times when natural disasters made them turn for
protection and survival to spirituality and art. The everyday return of
the sun and moon reassured these souls both in life and in death. This
year I will check on the day of the summer solstice whether or not my
hypotheses about Phalasarna are right.
